Despite its secrecy, there are certain details that automakers can’t hide from journalists, especially when it comes to registering a new name. Unfortunately for them, this process must go through a public registry, which rarely goes unnoticed. Needless to say, the news spread quickly last week when Ford registered the name "Boss."

As expected, the automaker itself has not revealed any official information on the matter for now. However, it’s safe to assume that this name will likely be associated with the Mustang or the Mustang Mach-E SUV.

A Bit of History

The name "Boss" was first used in 1969 with the Mustang Boss 302, a car that remains legendary to this day. This version was developed to meet the regulations of the Trans Am Racing series of the time. The model was produced for two years, in 1969 and 1970.

It wasn’t until 2012 that the "Boss" name made a comeback with the Mustang Boss 302 for the 2012 and 2013 model years. Excluding the Shelby GT500, the Boss 302 was the most performance-oriented Mustang available at the time. There was even a more extreme version called the Laguna Seca. Production of this special edition was limited to just 750 units, making it one of the most sought-after Mustang models among collectors and enthusiasts.

In the Name of Performance

One thing is certain: the "Boss" name will undoubtedly be tied to performance. What remains unclear is in what capacity. The Dark Horse already fulfills that role within the Mustang lineup, and the Mach-E GT offers impressive performance for an SUV. Some rumors suggest that the "Boss" name might be used for an enhanced track package for the Mustang GTD. Others believe it could be a decorative option package paired with the Mustang GT, similar to the California Special package.

In any case, we’re eager to learn more about what led Ford to register the "Boss" name. Whatever the outcome, I believe the American automaker won’t disappoint us.
